Music is for Everyone

Whether you are 5 or 95, you can enjoy piano music. It is important to be given the chance to make music because it can give us an emotional and creative outlet.

When and Why Should You Invest in a Piano

With 88 keys, over 200 strings and over 5000 other parts, the modern piano is a complex instrument with an immense range of volume and color. It can mimic a flute's golden line, a jazz bass's pizzicati, or the rich voices of the full orchestra. We are endowed with a boundless body of literature that is as broad as the piano's sonic potential; there is certainly more than we can study in a lifetime!

Piano vs. Keyboard

Many students and their families are uncertain about when to invest in a real piano. The cost, size, and volume are often limiting factors that keep students practicing on keyboards. However, no electronic similation, no matter how sophisticated, can replace the real instrument. Real instrumental training requires an active relationship as we respond to the instrument that responds to us. It should engage a deep critical hearing as we respond with our countless muscles, our intellect and intuition. The weight of keys, action of the keys, hammers, and dampers, and the physical resonance of the strings are priceless qualities that simply cannot be replicated through other technologies.

Some parents of young beginners worry that it is risky to make the financial commitment. Know that a piano can always be re-sold, and often without any depreciation of value.

Students should not spend more than six months or so on a keyboard or digital piano if they expect to fully benefit from their piano studies.

CarmenI was born in Hong Kong into a very musical family. My father and two brothers were musicians adept at multiple instruments. I had a passion for music at an early age, but I was not able to learn until later adolescence. Since I had a modest upbringing I was not fortunate enough to have a piano in our home and consequently had to “learn” at a music store nearby.

It was not an ideal situation, but I continued to improve on my own whenever there was a spare moment. Later, I was able to afford formal lessons and start in earnest to become a piano teacher. I had several piano teachers in Hong Kong each honing my skills and understanding not only in music theory, but performance as well. I taught piano in Hong Kong for four years after completing Hong Kong’s Royal School of Music examination.

Testimonials

LeeAnn Wang "Carmen is an amazing and inspirational teacher. As a student who started learning piano at a relatively older age, I was inspired by Carmen's dedication and passion for teaching to work harder at practicing piano and improving my technique. While she is strict and expects continuous improvement from he'd students, Carmen has always been considerate and patient and has never made me feel offended or discouraged from continuing to play piano. She genuinely cares for her students and treats them with the same warmth as a mother would treat her own children. Carmen is not only my piano teacher but my mentor and friend. I am sure that younger and older students alike will find value and satisfaction from learning the art of playing piano from Carmen."

Thank for the years yo have spent teaching me piano. Without your guidance and your putting up with my ill-mannered self, I don't think I'd have the same appreciation for music.

Thank you so much for showing me the joy of music. You were a wonderful teacher and I wouldn't have love music as much as I do today without you.

I have gone from only knowing "Mary had a little lamb" to so many other great songs that I didn't even know I had the skill to play. I will miss you Carmen.
